One Of my favorite weddings to photograph was a recent one, still very fresh in my mind and big in my heart!
We traveled to Beaver Island, an island on Lake Michigan that has a special place in Natalie’s heart as she spent many fond summer vacations there with her family. Beaver Island is part of a archipelago of small islands in northern Lake Michigan boasting sapphire water and crisp fresh air, an exciting gig to say the least!
Our wedding day shoot started with a drive down a gravel road to photograph the bride and her bridal party getting ready. We pulled up to a beachfront house surrounded by black eyed susans, butterflies and lavender. At this point we were feeling the magic and anxious to get our cameras out to start shooting.
Inside was the bride, her much beloved family which included three beautiful nieces, dear friends and a whole lot of love, a family really focused on each other. The nieces were working on making lavender chains to add to the ceremonies flowers and they turned out beautiful! There was lots of laughter, a few tears of happiness and a pure happiness that included us all. After Natalie put her simply cut, lacy dress on we took her out behind the house to grab some lakeside photos. So much driftwood, lavender and sunshine for her big day. The flowers in her hair, the dress, the landscape, all felt like we were in the presence of the finest fairy princess anywhere! Our shutters clicked away in tune with the melody of this island paradise.
We drove the bride to meet Bryan for their first look. Their chosen location was an overlook that had very special meaning. We arrived to find the groom shoe-less ( as was the bride) his curly hair as wild as the island itself. He went down a ravine and up to a secluded spot overlooking the lake, more magic! Natalie, so excited ran barefoot down the ravine and up it with her feet barely touching the ground! It was a joyous, loving first look if ever I’ve seen one. They were so perfectly placed there in the forest perched up over the water.
The ceremony was held at the Beaver Island Lodge, a place so perfectly resting between the forest and the lake. The ceremony was to be under a handmade and flower adorned arch. It was done with indigenous flowers and felt so connected to everything that was Beaver Island. The Fairy Princess Wedding day continues…
The ceremony was very sincere, sometimes funny and silly yet very personal. I felt so honored to have a camera in my hands, to be there to immortalize these moments. Moments to have forever.
After the ceremony as the cocktail hour was happening Natalie and Bryan did a fly-over of the island with all of us at the Beaver Lodge down below. Darrin my husband got to join them for this flight and to include some great aerial shots! A ride in a ‘75 Cadillac was their transportation to the small island airport. So many happy faces looked upwards to see these lovebirds pass overhead!
The reception continued the with the theme of this exuberant love and happiness.
We took the couple down to the waters edge for a some sunset photos under this bright orange sky.It was the perfect way to end a perfect day!
